How to Choose the Right Razor

Choosing the Right Razor Head

Although safety razors may take some time to master, once you’ve perfected the technique, you’ll enjoy a closer and more comfortable shave. They’re cost-effective, eco-friendly, and ideal for sensitive skin, as the single blade typically causes less irritation by requiring fewer passes. In contrast, Gillette cartridge razors are an excellent option for those who prioritize convenience. With their flexible heads and multiple blades, they offer a quick, easy shaving experience. Here’s a closer look at your options:

Closed Comb: Featuring a flat, protective bar beneath the blade, offering a gentle, close shave, minimizing the risk of nicks and irritation. Best for daily use, wet shaving beginners, or those with sensitive skin. Available in all series (excluding the ROCCA and COMPANION). Shop Closed Comb safety razors.

Open Comb: With evenly spaced 'teeth', open comb razors allow more of the blade to contact the skin, providing a closer, more direct shave. Best for experienced wet shavers or those with coarse, thick facial hair. Available in: Our TRADITIONAL series razors. Shop Open Comb safety razors.

The Outliers: ROCCA and COMPANION

Although both can technically be considered closed comb razors, the ROCCA and COMPANION series feature distinct design differences worth noting.

ROCCA

COMPANION

ROCCA: The ROCCA boasts a slightly increased blade exposure, making it a great middle ground for those seeking a more direct shave without sacrificing the safety of the flat-edged bar.

COMPANION: The COMPANION razor head has a slightly steeper blade angle and protective flaps on the sides of the blade to prevent unintentional nicks and cuts. Featuring a longer handle and hanging cotton cord, the razor is suitable for shaving the face, as well as the body and head.

Choosing the Right Handle

When it comes to choosing your razor handle, aesthetics and cost are obvious factors, but there are a few other considerations that may impact your decision.

Handle Length: This is largely a matter of personal preference. Shorter handles typically offer better grip and control, making them ideal for precision shaving. Longer handles are great for body shaving or those who prefer a little extra reach. Our COMPANION, TRADITIONAL 89 Grande, R41 Grande and SOPHIST series all feature longer handles if that’s what you’re after.

Material and Finish: The material and finish of your razor handle can affect its look, durability, and maintenance. For instance, stainless steel is highly durable and easy to maintain—just rinse and occasionally polish it. Resins and chrome offer a stylish and affordable option with minimal upkeep. However, natural materials like olive, ironwood, ash, or plum, which are used in many of the MÜHLE collections, look beautiful but may require a bit more care. To keep them looking their best, MÜHLE recommends re-oiling the surfaces every three to four weeks, depending on use. Finally, it is also worth noting that natural finishes like our Karelian Masur Birch, which have been finished in lacquer, become just as low maintenance as our resin handles.
