Safety Razor FAQ

Safety Razor FAQ

At MÜHLE, we take pride in assisting our customers in achieving their best shaving experience. To help you make informed choices, we've compiled a list of our most frequently asked safety razor questions, accompanied by some quick answers.

Whether you're trying to select the right razor or exploring the differences between open and closed comb designs, read on for more guidance!

How does a safety razor differ from a cartridge razor?

A safety razor is typically formed from three parts and features a single blade exposed on both sides of the razor head (they are also referred to as double edged razors, or DE razors for short). A cartridge razor contains multiple blades housed within a disposable cartridge.

When compared to a cartridge razor, is it cheaper to swap to a safety razor?

Yes! Annually the swap could save you around $86. Read the full cost breakdown in our blog here.

Are safety razors suitable for beginners?

Definitely! While they may require a bit of practice to get the hang of, don't be discouraged – once you've mastered the technique, you'll find them to be a rewarding and enjoyable way to shave. Our bestselling R89 is widely considered one of the gentlest safety razors on the market and a great choice for beginners.

MÜHLE Traditional Rosegold Safety Razor - Closed Comb

I’m thinking of swapping to wet shaving, what do I need to get started?

To start we’d recommend a closed comb safety razor, blades and good quality shaving cream. To elevate the experience a shaving brush and nourishing aftershave balm are great to have.

Can women use safety razors too?

Yes, in fact, our COMPANION safety razor has been specifically designed for body shaving.

MÜHLE COMPANION Unisex Safety Razor

Are there different types of safety razors available? What is the difference between open and closed comb?

MÜHLE Traditional Razors are available with closed comb or open comb razor heads. The open comb offers increased blade exposure for ‘the ultimate close shave’ and is hence recommended for experienced DE shavers and those with particularly thick hair growth. We recommend starting with a closed comb head, even if you have thick hair, to get used to the DE shaving method. Find out more here!

What about the blades?

You can purchase an additional pack of 10 safety razor blades from us for $5. Blades are a universal size so other brands will also fit our razors, however it’s a good idea to find out about the sharpness of the blades. MÜHLE blades are a medium sharpness- well suited for both beginners and experienced DE shavers. Completely recyclable, find out more about blade disposal here.

What should I consider when choosing a safety razor?

When choosing your safety razor, first consider the type of head you need (i.e. closed or open comb). A lot of what follows will then come down to personal preferences i.e. handle length, weight and material. From high-grade resins to precious woods, MÜHLE offer a whole host of finishes. I’ve heard safety razors are better for the skin, is that true?

Yes! Often achieving a closer shave, DE razors only have one blade compared to the 3 or 5 of cartridges (one pass with a cartridge razor is equal to 5 of a DE razor- which can itself lead to irritation!).

Are safety razors more environmentally friendly than disposable razors? Are the blades recyclable?

An icon of zero-waste, investing in a safety razor can be a fantastic way to become more sustainable. With the razors themselves lasting years upon years, and now even our packaging being completely recyclable, the only real waste product is the razor blades. They are, however, fully recyclable!
